Homicide at 1910 Y Street

UPDATE 9/14/12

On August 23, 2012 at 8:22 pm Omaha Police Officers responded to 19^th & Y Streets to investigate a shooting. Upon their arrival, they found 63 year old Gilberto Hernandez-Vazquez lying in the street in front of 1910 Y Street suffering from a gunshot wound.  He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  A homicide investigation was launched and Omaha Police are seeking the public’s assistance in their investigation.

At the time of the shooting, Gilberto was pushing his ice cream cart around the neighborhood, selling ice cream to the residents.  Gilberto was a common fixture in the 19^th & Y neighborhood and was known by most al the neighbors, frequently speaking to the residents while making his rounds in the neighborhood.  Residents who live in the area are saddened by the news that Gilberto was shot and killed in their neighborhood.  The Homicide Unit is following up on all leads received in this investigation.  Investigators believe there may have been persons that were I the area and may have seen something and have not spoken with detectives.  Any and all information is considered important.  Everyone with information is strongly encouraged to call the Homicide Unit, no matter how trivial it may seem.

Additional Rewards are being offered in this case as well.  The United States Marshals Office in Omaha, NE is offering a reward of  $2,500 for information leading directly to the arrest for the individual(s) responsible for the murder of Gilberto Hernandez-Vasquez.
